Blake, Hewitt and Safin all survive in Las Vegas
Tennis Betting Lines
03/02/2007 -
Las Vegas, NV (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Top seed and defending champion James
Blake advanced to the quarterfinals in unusual fashion, while second-seeded
Australian Lletyon Hewitt and third-seeded Russian Marat Safin survived hard
fought three-set matches at the $416,000 Tennis Channel Open.
Blake was leading 6-1, 3-1 when his opponent, Juan Martin del Potro, retired
because of breathing problems. Tournament rules state that games won or lost
in a walkover do not count, meaning that Blake originally didn't receive
credit for the win and was briefly eliminated with Russian Evgeny Korolev, who
beat Blake earlier this week, taking his place in the next round. However,
ATP officials overruled the call and put the American in the quarterfinals
anyway.
"This has troubled me enormously and I feel as though I'm damned if I do and
damned if I don't," ATP Executive Chairman and President Etienne de Villiers
said. "It's in the interests of the fans, media, tournament and players to
find a common sense solution. We have said all along we are going to learn
from the experiment."
Del Porto was just as upset from the decision that was first rendered, saying
he would have completed the match had he been fully aware of the implications
of his retirement.
"I wanted to finish the match, but also I was not aware of the technicality of
the rule," del Porto said. "I did not feel comfortable continuing."
Blake will next face Sam Querrey, who held off his fellow American Paul
Goldstein 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
Hewitt, who lost to Blake in last year's Las Vegas Final, dropped the first
set to Swede Thomas Johansson but came back to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, while Safin
trailed 3-0 in the third set to fellow countryman Igor Kunitsyn only to rally
for a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory.
Seventh-seeded Brit Tim Henman, making his 2007 season debut this week, will
not compete in the quarterfinals after he lost to Spaniard Feliciano Lopez 6-7
(1-7), 6-3, 6-4. Lopez, however, did advance to the round of eight and will
square off with Hewitt.
Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, meanwhile, awaits Safin in the quarterfinals.
Fourth-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer and unseeded Czech Jan Hernych also
landed in the quarters, as Melzer mauled Chilean Paul Capdeville 6-2, 6-2 and
Hernych humbled former world No. 1 Gustavo Kuerten 6-4, 6-4. Melzer and
Hernych went 2-0 in their round-robin groups this week at Darling Tennis
Center. Melzer will meet Hernych in Friday's quarterfinals.
This week's event featured a 32-player round-robin, which consisted of a 16-
player "play-off" where eight winners joined 16 other players to make-up
eight groups of three players. Each player played two matches in the
round-robin stage, with the winner from each group advancing to the
quarters, where the tournament will now be played out per a traditional
single-elimination format.

NFL Football Betting : Odds on NFL Division to Win the Super Bowl
NFL Super Bowl Betting
The AFC South and the NFC East are the favorite divisions to have the next Super Bowl champ among them in the NFL betting odds. But more down to the point, these football odds are in favor of the Indianapolis Colts, by far the strongest team in the AFC South, and the Dallas Cowboys of the NFC East.
Most sports fans would agree that these two teams top the list to win it all before the season even begins. In the BetUS Sportsbook football futures, the Colts are +800 in the odds to win the Super Bowl, while the Cowboys are sitting at +1000 and the Super Bowl XLIV champions New Orleans Saints at +900. In the AFC South, the Colts won the division for five straight years after the 2002 realignment, before the Tennessee Titans won it in 2008. But the Colts came back strong in 2009 to win the division again en route to the Super Bowl. The Cowboys are the favorite to win the NFC East, as well as to advance far into the post season. The Cowboys won the division last season before their horrendous loss in the NFC Divisional playoff to Brett Favre and the Minnesota Vikings. But the ‘Boys will take that loss humbly and be ready for the playoffs this time around.
The NFC South is also very strong, at +600 in the NFL futures, considering that it is home to the defending Super Bowl champions. However, some predictions have the Atlanta Falcons with possibilities of claiming the divisional title this season in place of the Saints, as no team has won back-to-back division championships since the division realignment took place. Let’s not overlook the AFC North at +500. As TO goes to Cincinnati to join Chad OchoCinco and Adam “Pac-Man” Jones, this team looks to claim the division title again. And it is likely they will do so. The Bengals lost in the AFC Wild Card spot in a hard-fought battle against the New York Jets last season. Lest not forget the Pittsburgh Steelers, the XLII Super Bowl Champions… All these teams present interesting odds and matchups for the upcoming season, but the safest and surest bet seems to be with the Colts in the AFC South and the Cowboys in the NFC East.
