World Cup 2010 Preview: Slovakia set for World Cup debut
Soccer Betting Lines
05/21/2010 -
Philadelphia, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Slovakia will make its first-ever
appearance at a major international competition in South Africa, and although
it is a newcomer to the big stage, don't expect it to be too much in awe.
The team may lack household names, but six of Slovakia's players played
professionally in Germany this past season, with another four plying their
trade in England.
The club also finished on top of a tough group in qualification that included
the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovenia, making them battle-tested.
One of the strengths of this team is its organization, and no player has a
bigger responsibility for holding things together at the back then Martin
Skrtel.
The 25-year-old Skrtel has been a regular in the Liverpool team, as long as he
is healthy.
Injuries have been a problem for the central defender since he arrived at
Anfield in January 2008, and he is recovering from his latest setback, a
broken metatarsal bone, which he suffered in late February.
Skrtel has not featured for the Reds since the injury, but he is confident
that he will be fit for the start of the World Cup.
Another player who Slovakia will lean on heavily is talented midfielder Marek
Hamsik, who will be trying to transfer a strong domestic season for Napoli
into World cup success.
Hamsik has proven to be proficient in finding the back of the net, which he
did 13 times in league play for the Serie A side this past season.
He will be the creative force in midfield for manager Vladimir Weiss, who will
rely on striker Stanislav Sestak to put away most of the chances he gets.
Sestak tallied six goals in 28 starts for Bochum in the Bundesliga this past
season, and he led Slovakia with six goals in qualification and will be hoping
to continue to score at that pace.
If Slovakia is to advance beyond the group stage in its inaugural World Cup
appearance, it will likely be due in large part to a favorable draw that
placed them in Group F along with Italy, Paraguay and New Zealand.
Italy is the defending champion but is not as strong as it was four years ago,
while New Zealand is one of the weakest teams in the entire tournament.
Paraguay figures to be Slovakia's main rival in the battle for second place,
and those two teams will meet in the second game of group play.
Much of the team's history is tied to the former Czechoslovakia, but this
squad is out to make some history of its own.
