Magic hope to inch closer to Southeast Division crown vs. Hawks

03/24/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard said after Monday's win in Philadelphia that it's good heading into the postseason under the radar since most people forget that Orlando is the defending conference champion.

With all the success Cleveland is garnering this season, Howard and the Magic have quietly earned a playoff spot and are on the verge of clinching a third straight Southeast Division title. The Magic will try to get closer to that goal Wednesday night against the rival Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena.

"The Hawks are a great team, they're playing great especially at home. We just got to go in there with a defensive mindset and get it done," Howard quipped following Monday's triumph.

Orlando has won three straight, 11 of 12 and improved to 2-0 on a three-game road trip with a 109-93 triumph over the 76ers. Howard posted his NBA-leading 55th double-double with 23 points and 15 rebounds, while Rashard Lewis netted 24 points for the Magic, who have won five in a row away from home and improved to 22-14 as the visitor. Vince Carter added 17 points to help the Magic post 50 wins for a third straight season.

The Magic, seeded second in the East behind the Cavs, shot 52.2 percent and buried 16-of-31 from three-point range at the Wachovia Center, much to the delight of head coach Stan Van Gundy.

"We made a lot of threes, and that was really the difference in the game. Pretty much everybody was knocking down shots," Van Gundy said after his squad improved to 34-12 against Eastern Conference opponents.

Atlanta hopes to get back on track tonight and fell 4 1/2 games behind the Magic in the Southeast standings after a 98-95 defeat at the hands of the Milwaukee Bucks on Monday at the Bradley Center.

Joe Johnson scored 14 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter, but missed two attempts in the final minute. Jamal Crawford scored 21 points and missed a game-tying three-point attempt at the buzzer for the Hawks, who entered the contest having won two straight and five of six games.

"Defensively we couldn't get stops down the stretch," Johnson said. "That's not like us."

Crawford is a leading candidate for Sixth Man of the Year, and is averaging 20.4 ppg this month. He also leads the NBA in scoring among players that have not started a game.

The Hawks have won six in a row at home and sport a 28-7 mark at Philips Arena this season. They are currently tied with Boston for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Orlando is aiming to sweep the season series from Atlanta and has won the first three meetings of 2009-10. The Magic are unbeaten in the previous six matchups with the Hawks, who have lost four straight as the host.
